For many decades car makers have been installing a wide assortment of air suspension systems on their top of the line cars. One thing these rubber based air suspensions have in common is that they wear out. The combination of age, road grime, and the constant flexing of the rubber while driving eventually leads to wear and dry rot, and they develop small holes.

The first sign that your air bag has a leak is when you come out in the morning and notice that one corner is sitting lower than the others, but it picks right up when you start the car. Many people forget about the problem at this point, since the car is still riding fine, it is just low in the morning until they start it.

But that air spring or strut is leaking air and you have a growing problem. The matching unit on the other side, and possibly all four wheels, is the same age, gone through the same conditions, and will soon be leaking as well. Plus, the air suspension compressor is not designed to run full time. Your air suspension system includes a solenoid at each spring or strut that keeps the air in it until the computer tells it to let some out. So, the suspension compressor on a properly working system does very little work.

Once you have a leak in the system, it has to start working more and more to keep up with
the leak, until it is running almost full time and burns out.

Now, you pull into your local repair shop that advertises spring and shock repairs, and they
explain that air suspension repairs are a dealer only item.
